The Dutchman had an impressive loan season with Burnley last term. He played a big role in their promotion from the Championship.

The Clarets wanted to re-sign him for £32 million last summer but Maatsen made it clear that he did not want to make the switch.

It is now reported that the left-back would welcome a move to City, who see him as a potential replacement for Sergio Gomez.

City were initially hoping to land him on a free transfer next summer, but the Blues recently activated a 12-month option in his contract.

As a result, they are still in a good position to command a fee. They could demand the same £32m fee if City make a formal approach.

Maatsen has also been linked with West Ham United. The Hammers are prepared to assure him with a regular starting role to join them.
