Portugal held by Serbia

12 September 2007 - 22:24

Portugal were held by Serbia in Lisbon, in a hotly contested game that finished 1-1. Portugal took the lead early on, but a superb fightback from Serbia brought the equaliser.

  • Chelsea want to sign Alejandro Garnacho for £30m?
  • Chelsea agree deal to sign wonderkid for €40m

  • Simao shocked the visitors with a beautiful free-kick, after Cristiano Ronaldo was fouled by Kovacevic.

After the goal, Serbia fought back and looked a good dynamic side, threatening very often particularly through Kovacevic. Serbia took full advantage as the game wore on, Zigic and Pantelic making their presence felt as full time neared after both appearing as substitutes.

However, it was Pantelic of Hertha Berlin in the 87th minute that grabbed the goal that levelled the score, to frustrate the already angry Portuguese fans. Portugal have now given away late levelers twice in two games at home, leaving their Euro 2008 qualifying plans in jeopardy. Portugal are now on 17 points while Serbia stay in touch on 14.

Not only this, but the worries were compounded as Portugal boss Scolari had a fist fight with a Serbia player.
