Manchester United are considering a shock move for former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso, according to The Athletic.
The Red Devils recently confirmed a huge setback with Luke Shaw ruled out for a month with a fresh calf problem.
The Englishman's fitness has been unreliable for some time and this has left the club short in options at left-back.
With Tyrell Malacia nursing a knee issue for the last year, the club could enter the market for another specialist option.
It is now reported that the club have discussed the prospect of landing Alonso, who is a free-agent at the current point.
Alonso parted ways with Barcelona at the expiry of his contract on June 30 and has yet to negotiate terms with any outfit.
A return to the Premier League could be an enticing option for the 33-year-old during the final phase of his playing career.
It remains to be seen whether United make formal contact with Alonso. They may consider offering a one-year deal.
