Arsenal are on the verge of signing Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners have been in negotiations with Sociedad for Merino over the past few weeks and talks are currently at an advanced stage.

Sociedad are eyeing €35 million plus €5 million in add-ons for the 28-year-old and the club's president has recently travelled to London.

Romano now reports that the Gunners are on the cusp of landing Merino and an agreement is expected to be finalised in the coming hours.

Merino has been manager Mikel Arteta's prime midfield target. The Spaniard has already agreed terms over a four-year contract with Arsenal.

Atletico Madrid made an attempt to sign him earlier in the summer, but Merino made it clear that he would prefer to join the Gunners instead.

It is only a matter of time before Merino makes the switch. He is set to become the club's third summer signing after David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori.
