Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is determined to bring Alvaro Fernandez back to Old Trafford amid interest from Liverpool.
The left-back left the Red Devils on a permanent basis to Benfica last summer, but the club have the option to buy him back for £17m.
Liverpool are also admirers of the United graduate, but they don't have the same luxury and will have to trigger the £42m release clause in his contract.
Hence, United have a clear advantage over their arch-rivals and Amorim has his sights on bringing Fernandez back to the club in the next transfer window.
Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have been injury prone and there is speculation that the former could be offloaded at the end of the season.
Fernandez has all the traits to suit the playing style under Amorim. He is an attacking full-back and would fit in the left wing-back role effectively.
Amorim is expected to operate with a 3-4-2-1 formation at United.
