The Red Devils looked at the possibility of signing the England international last summer, but they were priced out of a transfer deal.

United were willing to pay £50m for the centre-back, but the Toffees were adamant that he would not leave them for less than £70m.

The club remain interested in the 22-year-old and Givemesport claim that they are now likely to face competition from fierce rivals Liverpool.

The Merseyside giants are already in contact with the player's representatives, but United are still determined to win the race.

Branthwaite agreed personal terms with the Red Devils last summer and he was prepared to join them, suppose an agreement was reached.

United are bound to return for his services, but they may have to make an improved bid closer to £70m to persuade Everton to do business.
