Sunderland are to open talks to sign Germany under-21 attacking midfielder Paul Wanner on a season long loan deal from Bayern Munich as a replacement for Jobe Bellingham. Bellingham departed for Borussia Dortmund leaving a gaping hole in Sunderland's midfield that will likely be filled by Wanner, who has had an impressive under-21 tournament for Germany.
Wanner has already made his league debut for Bayern Munich and last season a hugely impressive stint at FC Heidenheim caught the eye of numerous top European clubs. Bayern will not yet be able to guarantee first-team football to Wanner, and the 19-year-old is being encouraged to move elsewhere for more experience before returning to the Bavarian side.
Sunderland have returned to the Premier League and are likely to be very busy signing new players before the beginning of the season, and Wanner is one name at the top of a very long list of needs.
Wanner will not be allowed to move to Sunderland on a permanent basis as Bayern see Wanner as one of their brightest young prospects.
