Manchester United were prepared to pay £55 million to sign Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, according to Duncan Castles.
The Red Devils bolstered their attack with the purchases of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko over the summer.
They were also keen on landing Semenyo from the Cherries and it is claimed that manager Ruben Amorim had a personal meeting with the 25-year-old.
United had reserved £55m for the versatile winger, but a deal did not materialise after Semenyo learnt about his potential weekly wages.
The Red Devils were only prepared to pay 70 percent of what Cunha and Mbeumo received. This urged him to stay at the Cherries, who rewarded him with a pay rise.
Semenyo has had a fine start to the campaign with two goals and an assist. He is likely to pursue a bigger challenge away from the Cherries at the end of the campaign.
It remains to be seen whether United return for his services.
