Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on the progress of Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller ahead of a potential approach next summer.
The Red Devils made a tentative enquiry for the Germany international before the transfer deadline last summer, but Stuttgart were reluctant to discuss a fee.
Stiller was also comfortable staying put, but his future could be away from the Bundesliga heavyweights when the current campaign concludes.
The midfielder has a release clause worth £35 million in his current deal, but Stuttgart can terminate that option by paying him around £1.7m.
They are expected to demand at least £44m for his services in future and reports claim that United could make an approach next summer.
United are determined to strengthen their midfield department, but they are unlikely to pursue a foreign-based signing at the start of the year.
The Red Devils could prioritise a midfield signing with Premier League experience this winter before purchasing Stiller at the end of the season.
