Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba has acknowledged that Manchester United's interest over the summer has put more pressure on him this campaign.
The Cameroon international was a top target for the Red Devils last summer, but a deal did not materialise after United were put off by the £115 million valuation.
Baleba has since struggled to produce a high level of performances and he has been the subject of criticism. He has now acknowledged that the transfer interest has hampered him.
He said: "I don’t think it affected me negatively, but I had a lot of pressure on me. When I started this season, I wanted to show the same performances as last season.
"Every day I try to work hard and get back to my level. Did I put too much pressure on myself? Yes, I think so, but I think it’s good."
Baleba was the priority midfield target for the Mancunian giants last summer, but the situation has completely changed in recent months.
The club have now turned their attention to Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson of Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest respectively.
United may not renew their pursuit of Baleba when the season ends.
