Real Madrid have also joined the race for the experienced Brazilian ace, and they could provide a big stumbling block in the race this summer.
Guimaraes has been fully committed to the Magpies over the past four years, but could leave the club to play regular Champions League football.
United look on course to qualify for the elite European competition. They are presently third in the league with 54 points with eight games left.
