Man City boss Mark Hughes has laughed off suggestions that the Premiership should employ a salary cap rule, insisting that Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman, made no sense.
"I doubt you will get a salary cap, I think European rules would forbid it," said the City boss.
"A lot of things are discussed at Premier League chairman level. How realistic they are I don't know, but I can't see two tiers happening any time soon either.
"Maybe Mr Gartside is trying to protect his own club's position because relegation can have such a huge effect.
"If you can guarantee there would be no relegation, it would benefit many clubs, and they would prefer that situation. But I do not think it will happen."
