Shearer to impose penalty on Barton

Shearer to impose penalty on Barton

04 May 2009 - 12:06

The Newcastle United boss, Alan Shearer, promised that he would take action against Joey Barton for the redcard and letting the team down against Liverpool.

  • Chelsea join Liverpool & Man Utd in race to sign 26yo
  • Barcelona identify Arsenal midfielder as key transfer target

  • Joey Barton was sent off for a reckless tackle on Xabi Alonso in Newcastle United's 0-3 loss against Liverpool. This will rule him out for the remainder of the season because of the three-match ban on him.

Shearer accused that Barton has "let the football club down and he's let himself down, without a doubt", and assured that he will take disciplinary action against Barton. "I will do what I can", is what the former Newcastle striker said, and it seems that Barton might lose his two weeks' wages.

The incident happened in the 80th minute, Newcastle were down by two goals by that time. Later on, the English midfielder apologized for his horrific tackle.

Barton has been sent off four times in his career.
