Downing prefers Liverpool move

Stewart Downing has revealed that he would prefer to join Liverpool, despite the interests of Arsenal; and a deal for the Aston Villa winger is expected to take place this week.

Liverpool have so far offered £14m for the former Middlesbrough and England international midfielder; however his club Aston Villa are looking for closer to £19m.

Arsenal had been credited with an interest in the left midfielder, however the player has told colleagues that he would prefer to move to Anfield with Liverpool.

Downing is expected to join on either Thursday or Friday.
