Valencia goalkeeping legend Santiago Canizares has quit football. In an emotional speech, the ex Valencia captain admitted that he had come to the end of the road and after being dropped by Koeman he saw no way back into the first team squad.

“I have always wanted to quit here so maybe it’s the end of the road,” said the 38-year old.

Canizares moved to Valencia in 1998 to replace the retired Andoni Zubizarreta and since then he became the number one choice until Koeman decided to release him.

The Spain keeper helped Valencia reach the UEFA Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001 and win La Liga titles in 2002 and 2004.

He featured in 46 games for Spain including matches in the World Cup 1994, 1998 and 2006 and the Euro 1996, 2000 and 2004.
