Manchester United are unlikely to secure the services of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer, The Mail claims.

The Netherlands international recently emerged as a top target for United, but they appear to have been put off by the price tag.

According to The Mail, the Catalan giants are prepared to part ways with De Jong this summer if they receive around £70m.

United recently made an initial enquiry to the Blaugrana, but they have now made it known that they can't afford the player.

Incoming manager Erik ten Hag will be handed a budget of around £125m, and does not want to spend part of it on De Jong.

The Dutch tactician wants to be smart in the transfer market by bringing in quality talents while spending reasonable fees.

Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez has recently emerged as an option for United. He could be prised away for around £30m.

United may target similar signings rather than big-name players.
