Chelsea confirm defender as fifth summer signing

Chelsea have confirmed Basel defender Renato Veiga as their fifth signing of the summer transfer window.

The Blues have been very busy since the start of the summer and they have already made multiple signings.

Tosin Adarabioyo initially arrived on a free transfer before Omari Kellyman was purchased from Aston Villa.

Barcelona wonderkid Marc Guiu was the club's third acquisition after they triggered the £5m release clause in his contract.

Leicester City's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall became the Blues' fourth signing and the club have now confirmed Veiga's arrival.

Veiga is predominantly a left-back by trade, but he also has the ability to play in central defence or from holding midfield.

Chelsea were initially keen on landing Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, but they were priced out of a potential transfer.

Bologna made it clear that they wanted a straight-cash deal worth £42m which was not within the budget of the Blues.

Calafiori is now on the verge of joining London rivals Arsenal.
