Chelsea manager furious as transfer target signs new deal

Everton defender stays at club, rejects Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is said to be furious that the club were unable to complete a move for Jarrad Branthwaite, as the 23-year-old centre-back has finally put pen to paper on a new contract with Everton. The 6 foot 5 defender has penned a long-term deal at the Toffees.

Chelsea had hoped to secure a move for the England international, and Maresca had asked the club to spend whatever it requires to land the centre-back. Maresca sees Branthwaite as one of the best defenders in Europe.

Signing the deal, Branthwaite told Everton's official website: "I’m over the moon. It's been something we've been talking about since the end of the season and to get it signed now is something I'm really excited about.

"The trust the Club's put in me and how many games I've played over the past two seasons has made it quite an easy decision for me to stay and to keep progressing as a player."

It is understood that Branthwaite has a minimum fee transfer release clause in his contract, believed to be more than £75 million.
