Ruud still holds a grudge
Real Madrid forward Ruud van Nistelrooy has today discussed his less than perfect relationship with coach Marco van Basten ahead of Euro 2008.
The two had a well publicised disagreement which started way back at the last World Cup, where the ex-Manchester United forward was substituted for three games on the spin. Then after a series of matches where he was either left out of the squad by van Basten or simply opted not to attend, Ruud announced his international retirement.
Despite team mates and van Basten encouraging van Nistelrooy to rejoin the international fold, he has yet again opted to speak out against his coach and former idol, claiming that they can now only have a 'working relationship'.
âWe donât have to eat together or have a drink to work together. Both of us are pursuing the same goal: thatâs to have a good European Championship. Weâre working together to achieve that aim. And weâre doing it in a very professional manner.â
âA year ago, given the context, I wasnât really thinking of playing in this tournament. Iâm in good shape. My enforced break has allowed me to have a rest. Iâm fresh ahead of what could be my last big tournament.â
Ruud will face a tough task at Euro 2008 as he aims to guide the Oranje through the group of death and into the last eight.
