Liverpool want Everton star to succeed Van Dijk

Liverpool have identified Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite as a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, according to TeamTalk.

The Reds signed Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo (loan) over the summer and the pair have fared brilliantly in the early part of the season.

Jacquet has made the right centre-back position his own. Araujo, who is primarily a central defender, has shone from the right-back role.

The Merseyside giants are still keen on landing another centre-back and have their sights set on pursuing a deal for Branthwaite at some point next year.

Van Dijk has been an undisputed starter in the left centre-back role as the captain, but there is an acceptance that a proper successor is required.

Branthwaite has emerged as an ideal fit for the Anfield giants, but there is no indication that the Toffees will entertain his sale in the near future.

The Englishman is fully committed to the Toffees after his injury woes last term and may not push for a move either against the club's wishes.

Manchester United are also keeping a close eye on his performances.
