Manchester United have suffered a setback in contract negotiations with captain and midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese had a sensational 2025/26 season with the Red Devils, contributing 21 assists and nine goals in all competitions.

He has already bagged four goals in the current campaign, but his performances have been well below-par in recent weeks.

It is now revealed that United have made no progress over a renewal for the Portuguese, whose current deal expires in June next year.

United have the option to extend his stay for another 12 months, but there is a possibility that the playmaker could move beyond that.

Fernandes is not convinced over the club's growth under the current ownership and believes more investment should be made.

There is no resolution as things stand and it won't come as a surprise if United trigger the clause and sell him when the season ends.

Fernandes has a release clause worth £54m for European clubs. Bayern Munich have been admirers of the Portuguese in the past.
