Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has returned early from international duty, according to reports.

The Portugal international has been a key player for the Red Devils this term with 15 goal contributions in all competitions.

He recently played the entire 90 minutes for Portugal against Sweden and manager Roberto Martinez has now released him.

Fernandes won't be joining United immediately. He has been given a breather for the next five days before reporting for training.

United need their captain in the best physical shape as they look to qualify for the Champions League against the odds this term.

They are currently nine points behind Aston Villa who are fourth. The club have a game in hand over the West Midlands side.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils are six points behind fifth-placed Spurs. United need both teams to drop points to make the top four.

Even then, there is nothing straightforward. The club would still need to win their remaining 10 games to give themselves a chance.
