Manchester United were reportedly close to signing Paris Saint-Germain winger Xavi Simons last summer.

Simons rejoined PSG from PSV at the end of last season after they triggered the buy-back option of around €6m.

United subsequently made an offer of €60m for Simons which was accepted by PSG, but the player rejected the move, as per BILD.

The Dutchman eventually chose to link up with RB Leipzig on loan. The decision has proved worthwhile for his development.

Simons currently has nine goals and 15 assists for the campaign and he has been touted to rejoin Leipzig on another loan deal.

United would have benefited from his services too, but Simons was probably concerned over his playing time prospects.

With Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony in the squad, his decision was justifiable at the time.

Simons will return to PSG when the season ends. He will have the choice to choose his next loan club, as per Fabrizio Romano.
