Preview: Newc. vs Everton

Preview: Newc. vs Everton

07 October 2007 - 09:38

Newcastle take on Everton at St James' Park on Sunday as Newcastle hope to continue their unbeaten home record. Michael Owen could return after some minor surgery, and a victory for Newcastle could take them above Everton in the Premiership.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Arsenal handed huge boost ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • Newcastle lost their last match with Man City, whilst Everton defeated Metallist in the UEFA Cup during midweek.

Newcastle are expecting a boost with striker Michael Owen, who is included in the England squad for forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia, likely to return after undergoing hernia surgery. Brazilian defender Cacapa could also return from injury for Newcastle.

However, for Everton, Andrew Johnson is likely to be out with a groin problem and the impressive Victor Anichebe - who wrapped up the game against Metallist in midweek - is likely to start as Everton hope to sneak some points in a tough away travel.

However, the big news for this match is the return of Michael Owen. When Sam Allardyce spoke of Owen's impending return, he said: Magpies boss Sam Allardyce said: "Michael has done his first training session with the lads this morning, and as long as there is no reaction from that session, then we will look tomorrow morning and ask him how it is.

"If it is fine, he will join us again and he should be fit to be in the squad for us on Sunday, so it is all good news for us from that point of view."

    Newcastle 1-1 Everton

A tough one to call but the return of Newcastle's Michael Owen will improve morale in the squad. Newcastle will hope to continue their impressive home record, whilst Everton are no pushovers and will miss Andrew Johnson - but - will be able to replace him successfully with Anichebe. A draw will be a good result for both sides.
