Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made an official offer for Per Mertesacker of Werder Bremen, according to reports from Germany this morning. It is understood that the Gunners have bid 8m GBP for the German international.

  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • Mertesacker will be out of contract in 12 months time, and the club are desperate to stop the player from leaving on a free transfer.

The Gunners are desperate to find a new centre defender to partner Thomas Vermaelen at the heart of Arsenal's defence next year.

However, Werder Bremen coach Klaus Allofs remains hopeful Mertesacker will stay at the club: "The chance of Per Mertesacker remaining with us is still alive.

"We have just dropped talks of a new deal for now. It's not off the cards. We have a season to go and we could easily start to discuss it during the new campaign."
