Joey Barton has been placed on the transfer list and told that he can leave Newcastle on a free transfer. This ends months of speculation regarding the future of the midfielder.

Barton has been in the headlines recently for complaining about the board of directors at Newcastle.



With one year left on his contract, Newcastle are happy to let him leave on a free transfer now.



"The player has been advised that he can leave the club on a free transfer," said a club statement.
