Arsenal boss clarifies exit comments

20 November 2011 - 07:19

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has moved quickly to clarify comments made to France Football, suggesting that the Frenchman would depart at the end of the current league season. Wenger has instead revealed he told reporters that he would leave only if his team underperformed.

  • For the first team under Wenger's tenure, the Frenchman finds himself under pressure to perform and with many supporters questioning his management.

However, recent stunning performances have seen the Gunners move up to 5th in the league, and Wenger's position seems to be safe.

Wenger said: "It was a conversation about if I did not do well enough.

"I said that's the only way I would consider, if I was below what is expected at the club.

"I have to honestly rate the quality of my work at the end of the season and think 'did I take the maximum amount out of the team'?

"You want me to say now 'if I do not take Arsenal into the top four, then I will quit', which is what I will not say."
