Newcastle scouts have been monitoring Vitoria Guimaraes' 24 year old Brazilian striker Edgar in action; the former Porto striker is currently the top scorer in the Primeira Liga of Portugal, and could be the replacement that the Toon faithful have been hoping for since the departure of Andy Carroll last January.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Arsenal handed huge boost ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • Edgar currently has a contract with Vit. Guimaraes until 2014, and is valued by the club at around 5m GBP. According to reports, Sir Alex Ferguson has recommended Edgar to good friend Alan Pardew, who instructed his scouts to catch a glimpse of the Brazilian in action.

The 24 year old has yet to represent Brazil at international level, but recently acquired Portuguese citizenship after five years playing in the top flight there.
