Newcastle scouts have been spotted watching French side Rennes, and they are believed to have been monitoring the progress of young French left back Kévin Théophile-Catherine. The 22 year old has been a crucial member of the Rennes first team since making his debut in 2009.

  • Last week Newcastle had been linked with a move for fellow full back Aly Cissokho, but it appears the Toon have missed out in their efforts to land the left back and will now turn their attentions to Theophile-Catherine.

Newcastle have a growing selection of French players at their disposal, with the likes of Yohan Cabaye, Gabriel Obertan, Sylvain Marveux and Hatem Ben Arfa all in their squad.

Eyefootball understands that the defender has been recommended by Obertan, who has worked with the defender in France's youth teams.

Theophile-Catherine has already played for the French under-21 side, and is valued at approximately 4 million EUR by Rennes.
