Newcastle United today completed the transfer of Senegal international striker Papiss Demba Cisse for an undisclosed fee. The figure paid to Bundesliga side Freiburg is believed to be around 8 million GBP.
The Toon Army have been chasing Cisse for over a year, and it appears that Newcastle have won the race to secure his coveted signature and the striker has put pen to paper on a five and a half year contract at the Sports Direct Arena.
After completing the deal, Cisse said:Â "I want to pay back the confidence the club have shown in me and give the supporters something to be proud of. I am aware of the huge importance of the number nine shirt and, when I spoke with the manager, he made it very clear how important this shirt is. I will treat it with the respect and I hope to do my very best in this shirt."
A delighted Alan Pardew - who had been planning to partner Papiss with international team mate Demba Ba for some time - revealed that the club had been tracking Cisse for a long time:Â "Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice in the specific role he has at the end of the play.
"He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years."
