Mark Hughes wants to make Dutch international defender Erik Pieters the first signing of his reign as Stoke City manager. The defender almost joined Newcastle last year, but sustained an injury at the last minute.

It has been reported that Stoke have offered&nbsp;&pound;3 million to PSV Eindhoven for the defender, but the Dutch side are holding out for closer to&nbsp;&pound;4 million, a figure that had been agreed with Newcastle last year.<br />

The 24-year-old left back has played for his country 15 times and almost reached the 100 game milestone for Dutch side PSV.
