Aston Villa have announced that star striker Christian Benteke has agreed on a new deal with the club and has withdrawn his transfer request. This new agreement has brought to end Tottenham’s pursuit of the striker.

  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Benteke had earlier handed in a transfer request to the club officials just 10 months into his 4-year-contract. He has now added another year to the previous deal, reaffirming the faith his team-mates and fans have in him.

"I spoke with the manager when I returned to training and we had a good talk”, said Benteke to the club’s official website.

"I am very happy to be back here in Birmingham and at Aston Villa, and to sign a new contract. This is a great club and it has given me a lot.

"Now I have to give back to my teammates and the fans who have always been right behind me. The end of last season was very good and the lads were very strong.”

Club manager Paul Lambert revealed his delight at Benteke’s decision to stay with the club as he believes that the player could go on to be a bigger asset for the club.

"It is my opinion that the best thing for Christian is to remain at Aston Villa. He enjoyed a terrific first season at the club and can use that as a platform to hopefully enjoy more success this season.”
