Sunderland have seen their latest loan bid for summer target Charis Mavrias rejected by Greek side Panathinaikos. The Black Cats had earlier agreed a £2.5m deal for the winger, but eventually had to withdrew their offer after growing frustrated due to a series of delays in finishing up the deal.
After the departure of James McClean to Wigan Athletic, the Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio is now desperate to land a replacement, with Marvias thought to be the first transfer priority according to the Sunderland Echo.
Di Canio attempted to seal a season-long loan deal for 19-year-old Mavrias but saw his bid rejected instantly by Panathinaikos, who are interested in selling the player on a permanent deal citing financial difficulties.
Mavrias has 65 appearances to his name for Panathinaikos so far.
