Jewell in frame for Wigan job

07 November 2007 - 19:55

Paul Jewell is in the frame for a shock return to his old stomping ground as coach of Wigan. Jewell left the club after saving them from relegation last season, but could be set for a swift return to management after bookmakers placed him as favorite for the job.

  • When asked today if Jewell was his first-choice candidate Whelan said: "Absolutely."

Jewell, though, denies contact with officials at the JJB Stadium and is leaving himself open to an approach from the Football Association of Ireland.

"Let me make it quite clear, I have had no contact with chairman Dave Whelan these past few days or anyone at the club for that matter," he said.

"But, after six months away from management, I am ready and willing to return to work.

"Any offers that come my way I will consider and I firmly believe I will return to football refreshed and a better manager."
