Newcastle United look set to launch a bid to secure the services of Remy Cabella in the January transfer window, according to Montpellier HSC president Laurent Nicollin.
The Magpies have been long-term admirers of the talented midfielder, with manager Alan Pardew keen on strengthening his midfield department with yet another French player, as he aims to guide the club to an European qualifciation spot.
Manchester United have shown interest on the 23-year-old in recent weeks, but according to Montpellier HSC president Laurent Nicollin, the Magpies lead the race for Cabella's signature with the Red Devils yet to make a proposal.
"Manchester has not sent any proposal," Laurent Nicollin said. "As for Newcastle, it seems to me they are about to make one, but I expect confirmation on that. But the idea is still that Remy is with Montpellier until June."
Cabella has scored 6 goals in 18 appearances for the club so far this season.
