Wenger praises Flamini

Wenger praises Flamini

23 November 2007 - 16:38

Arsene Wenger has praised Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini for his performances this year and for keeping Gilberto Silva, Diaby and Denilson out of the first-team. The Frenchman made his international debut last week.

  • Nottingham Forest agree deal to sign Chelsea target
  • Chelsea now want to sign West Ham star after Joao Pedro

  • The 23-year-old even forced his way into France side, making his debut as a substitute in a friendly against Morocco last week. However, a thigh injury ruled him out from their final Euro 2008 qualifier against Ukraine and from Gunners’ Premiership clash against Wigan tomorrow.

"He got his first cap and we are all happy for him," Wenger said on the club’s official website.

"Since the begin of the season you judge Flamini on performances and you cannot fault him on that. He has done a job in every area of his game, defensively, tactically as a team player, and we know as well he can turn up and score a goal.”

Wenger had towards the end of last season, admitted that Flamini needed to play regularly and could be sent out for first-team football. However, that was not to be and the young Gunner has flourished with the north Londoners.

Wenger added: "I tried to be fair with him [when he considered his future]. I could not stop him from leaving but told him if he stays, he knew the rules.

"We can only respect that mental strength and that character and to show on the pitch how good you are. It gives you confidence when you are 23 years old like Mathieu."
