Verthongen: heading for Tottenham exit?

Jan Vertonghen ready to quit Tottenham

25 February 2014 - 05:24

Belgium international defender Jan Vertonghen has admitted that he could be set for a shock White Hart Lane departure. The former Ajax centre back admits that he would be unable to stay with Spurs if Tottenham are unable to compete in next year's Champions League.

  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • Vertonghen has been one of the bright sparks of a very average Tottenham campaign so far and is reportedly edging closer to the exit door amidst talk of interest from Spanish giants Barcelona. It is understood that the Nou Camp side are looking for a long term replacement for Carles Puyol and have their sights firmly set on the Belgian star.

With just 11 games left during Tottenham's Premier League season to come and Spurs currently falling further behind the leading pack, Vertonghen is concerned that time is running out for Tim Sherwood's side.

When asked about his future, Vertonghen told reporters: "What I want is to be playing in the Champions League with Tottenham, so I hope we get in this year. Do I have a decision to make if we don't? I can't say anything about that. Let's see after the end of the season, after the World Cup."
