Uruguay, who had been tipped as one of the World Cup's favourites prior to the beginning of the tournament, slumped to a shock 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica in the opening game of Group C.

  • Many had tipped Uruguay, with the likes of Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, to push for a World Cup title challenge. On this kind of display, they seem to be some way off. Luis Suarez was rested for the game, with all eyes on the match against England to unleash the Liverpool man.

Uruguay opened the scoring in the 24th minute, as PSG man Edinson Cavani blasted home to put the 1930 and 1950 World Cup winners in the lead.

From there on wards, and into the second half, Costa Rica looked very impressive. Arsenal forward Joel Campbell levelled the scores with a stunning finish from distance. Oscar Duarte then put his country into the lead just two minutes later.

Marcos Urena then wrapped up the match in the 84th minute with a well placed finish.

In injury time, Maxi Pereira was sent off for a nasty lunge on Joel Campbell.
