Eric Abidal completes Olympiakos move

06 July 2014 - 13:58

In an interesting turn of events, former Barcelona star has completed a move to Greek club Olympiakos, two days after signing a one-year contract extension with his current club Monaco.

  • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
  • Arsenal suffer big injury blow ahead of Fulham game
  • The left-back had joined Monaco last season from Barcelona making 26 appearances for the French club in Ligue 1.

He had reportedly made a deal with Monaco that if his Barcelona teammate Victor Valdes will be brought to Monaco, he will stay with them. But after Valdes' suffered a knee injury last season in a match against Celta de Vigo, Napoli decided not to bring the goalkeeper due to doubts over his fitness.

Valdes too had revealed last season before his injury that it would be his last stay at the Catalan giants and had reportedly shown interest in Napoli.

But as fate would have it, Napoli stopped negotiations with Valdes resulting in Abidal's switch to the Greek champions Olympiakos.

Abidal had a liver transplant in 2012 while playing for Barcelona after being diagnosed with a cancerous liver tumour in 2011.
