Luke Shaw dubbed 'too expensive' by Chelsea manager

Chelsea labels Luke Shaw deal 'too expensive'

27 July 2014 - 05:56

Jose Mourinho has hit out at Manchester United for their signing of Luke Shaw from Southampton, claiming that United have paid well over the odds for the England international left back.

  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Mourinho has already kick started the perennial mind games by claiming United have spent top dollar to sign Shaw, insisting that Luke Shaw's lofty wage demands would have "killed" Chelsea. Mourinho's salary demands of £100,000 are reportedly too high for Chelsea. Shaw became the 4th most expensive defender in world history when United signed him from the Saints for £27 million.

"If we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, to sign Luke Shaw, we are dead," said Mourinho.

"We would have killed our stability with financial fair play and killed the stability in our dressing room, because when you pay that much to a 19-year-old kid - a good player, fantastic player - but when you pay that amount of money, the next day, we would have had players knocking on our door."
