Wickham: heading for Sunderland departure?

Sunderland fear Connor Wickham departure

Sunderland are worried that striker Connor Wickham could be heading for the Stadium of Light's exit door. West Ham have made a fresh bid for the striker, tabling an offer of 6.75 million pounds for the former Ipswich Town man.

  • The Hammers have already signed the likes of Mauro Zarate and Enner Valencia as replacements for the injured Andy Carroll this summer, but Connor Wickham is the name that continues to be most linked with a transfer to Sam Allardyce's club.

Speaking of transfer bids for his players, Poyet quipped: "I think they (bids) are going to come for someone. I hope not. That last day of the transfer window is terrible. You don’t want to answer the phone or check your emails. You don’t want anything unexpected."

Connor Wickham burst into form towards the end of last season's Premier League campaign and helped guarantee the Black Cats' Premier League survival for 2013/14. That form has interested the likes of West Ham.

Poyet then mentioned Wickham as a player that could be heading for a summer move but that he would like to keep the England under-21 at the club: "For me, I think he is going to stay with us. It’s tough because I would like to know that now."
