The England international missed out on the World Cup finals in Brazil with an Achilles injury sustained at the back end of last season.

A report from Sky Sports claims that the 23-year-old has been told that he will be allowed to leave the North London club during the current transfer window.

In addition to this, the Saints have made a formal bid in the region of £12m for the services of the talented midfielder.

Townsend was left out of the match-day squad for the club's 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.
