Southampton are understood to be inching closer to the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, according to Goal.com.
The talented centre-back joined the Spanish champions from Ajax last summer, but has since failed to cement his place in the first-team line-up.
It is believed that Atleti boss Diego Simeone is open to the sale of the Belgian international before the transfer deadline, and a report from Goal.com claims that the Saints are ready to rival Sunderland for the player's services.
Alderweireld made 12 appearances for the Basque club last season.
