Arsenal boss Wenger tells Ramsey to focus less on goals

27 September 2014 - 06:15

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reminded Welsh international Aaron Ramsey that his duty is a midfielder is to create play, and not worrying about scoring goals.

  • Chelsea ready new contract for star midfielder
  • Chelsea make first move to sign Xabi Alonso

  • After an impressive couple of seasons, particularly on the goalscoring front; Ramsey has recently been heralded as the future of the Gunners' side. An average start to the season the Welshman has seen him come in for some criticism though and now coach Arsene Wenger wants to see the player work his creative side.

"I believe he felt a bit more pressure to score. You have always to come back to basics," said Wenger.

"What is my job? Midfielder, win the ball and give a good pass.

"He has a natural engine and a consequence of that is he will have chances, but if every time you play you think you have to score, and every time you want to be in the box, you forget a little bit about the basics of the job.

"He has a terrific engine and on the pitch he never hides. So when he sometimes makes a mistake, it is a spectacular one. But if you look at his overall contribution to the team it is always fantastic."
