Atletico Madrid are planning a bid for Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata at the end of the season.

The Spanish giants will look forward to boosting their midfield options in the summer, and Mata is understood to be at the top of their transfer shortlist.

Mata has been in and out of the United side in recent weeks, with Louis van Gaal claiming that the club are in need of a midfielder with much more potential that the Spaniard.

According to The Sun, Atleti will test United's resolve by making a summer bid for the Spain international.

The 26-year-old joined the Mancunian giants from Chelsea in January 2014.
