Former Derby County manager Steve McClaren is regarded as the front-runner to take over the managerial reigns at Newcastle United.
The Magpies had made an attempt to bring in McClaren during the back end of the campaign, with the club lingering above the relegation places.
However, McClaren rejected the offer as he had very little time to change things at St.James Park.
Reports now suggest that the former England boss is back in the reckoning for the Magpies role, having seen the club fail in their bid to bring in Manchester City's Patrick Vieira as their new head coach.
Newcastle United were unable to guarantee Vieira full control over the club's transfers, and this pulled the plug on the deal.
