The Villains had been linked with a move for the England international earlier this summer, but the speculation came to an end as he underwent a shoulder injury.

According to The Mirror, Villa boss Tim Sherwood will step up his interest in the 24-year-old winger after he returned to training at the North London outfit.

Townsend made just 10 league appearances for Spurs last term.
