Everton had reportedly had a loan offer rejected for Real Madrid forward Denis Cheryshev.
The Russian international had been tipped to make way from the Bernabeu during the summer transfer window, having struggled to cement a regular starting place.
According to The Star, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez had turned to the 24-year-old after missing out on Dynamo Kiev star Andriy Yarmolenko.
It is added that Real were reluctant to allow Cheryshev move on a season-long loan.
Cheryshev spent the past two seasons on loan at Sevilla and Villareal respectively.
