The Argentina international has been long linked with a move to the Premier League.

According to The Record, United boss Louis van Gaal is expected to reinforce his ranks in the New Year following the lack of creativity during the early stages of the season.

The report adds that Benfica attacker Gaitan tops the club's shortlist for the January transfer window.

Gaitan's current deal has a £25m release clause.
