FIFA keen on Nations Cup change

18 January 2008 - 18:26

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has confirmed intentions to move the African Nations Cup from European winter time to European summer.

  • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
  • Arsenal suffer big injury blow ahead of Fulham game
  • Blatter has confirmed that in 2016 the tournament will be moved to either June or July.

"This is a tradition, but one should have now the courage to go into the international calendar and see if it's not possible to deal with it," said Blatter.

"We put a target for 2016 that by that time the international calendar must be definitely in accordance with the interests of everybody."

This intention will be welcomed by premiership managers as around 40 premiership players will be featuring in the Nations Cup.

There is however opposition to this move, most notably by Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Caf has maintained that the weather in summer for most Africa is not ideal footballing conditions.
